Louisa, Greg, Bob and Anita Caplan traveling in Patagonia, February 2008

  • European architecture is dominant in Argentina and Patagonia
The four of us wandered around Punta Arenas as tourists are wont to do. The city prospered during the days of the estancias. Well the estancias are still here, but in the early days, some got very wealthy on the wool and meat trade. First wool and then with refrigeration, meat could be exported. Things took off at the turn of the 20th century and several of the houses remain. One has been turned into a high end hotel and the other is a museum. We visited both. The first photo is of a typical building which shows the European influence.
